It consists of material recorded four years earlier when Monk worked extensively with John Coltrane, issued after Coltrane had become a leader and jazz star in his own right. And they mightn't have been any better!

It was a wonderful experience. I would have liked to have worked over all those numbers again, but then I guess the performances wouldn't have had the same spontaneity. The impetus for the album was the discovery of three usable studio tracks recorded by the Monk Quartet with Coltrane in July at the beginning of the band's six-month residency at New York's legendary Five Spot club near Cooper Square. Song For My Father. The quartet was filled out by the bassist and drummer from either of their bands. The album was inspired by a trip that Silver had made to Brazil. The reissue presents the original ellingtn as it was intended, using alternate takes from the original sessions, plus the stereo masters of the takes used on the original album, all rounded out with a mono outtake or two.
